Shabbat & Yom HaAtzmaut Observance

Congregation Beth Shalom's Shabbat & Yom HaAtzmaut Service on Friday, May 4th at 6:30 pm. will include our Friday Night Live Musicians. A special photo documentary, Faces of Israel, presented by Ira Lebowitz will be featured in the Oneg. Ira will present slides from his 2011 trip to Israel.

Third Annual Sioux City Jewish Film Festival

The Jewish Federation of Sioux City and the Betty Strong Encounter Center will present the third Annual Sioux City Jewish Film Festival on April 29 and May 3. Admission to both films is free and open to the public.
"Jewish Soldiers in Blue & Gray" will be shown at 2 pm on Sunday, April 29th At the Encounter Center (Missouri Riverfront exit 149 off I-29). The film explores the hisotry of the Civil War Jews who fought on both sides of the battlefield.
"Saviors in the Night" will be shown at 7 pm on Thursday, May 3rd at Congregation Beth Shalom. The film tells the story of courageous farmers who hid the Spiegel family during the Holocaust.

Sophie Leopold Bat Mitzvah

Lisa and Julian Leopold cordially invite you to a Shabbat Service as their daughter Sophie becomes a Bat Mitzvah. Friday night services at the special time of 7:30 will be followed by a Oneg. Saturday morning services at 9:30 am will be followed by a Kiddush lunch.

Tolerance Week Activities

The 7th Annual Tolerance Week, sponsored by the Gerald L. & Kathleen A. Weiner Foundation, will be held during the week of April 16-20, 2012. Activities will include:
  • Monday, April 16 - 6:00 pm: An evening of poetry and music with a tolerance theme will be hosted by the Sioux City Conservatory of Music, 1300 Pierce St.
  • Tuesday, April 17 - 7:30 pm: Nicky's Family, an award winning documentary will be shown at the Orpheum Theater. Dave Lux, a member of Nicky's family who appears in the film, will speak after the film. Lux will also speak at a preview event at WIT at 11:00 am.
  • Wednesday, April 18 - 7:00 pm: In the Shadow of the Acropolis, a documentary of the history of the Holocaust in Greece, will be shown in the UPS Auditorium, Morningside College.
  • Thursday, April 19 - 4:00 pm: The Art, Poetry & Music of Terezin, a presentation by Nan Wilson will be held in the Stark Student Center, Briar Cliff College.
  • Friday, April 20 - 6:30 pm: Congregation Beth Shalom will observe Shabbat & Yom HaShoah. Services will include special readings by Morningside College Students

All events are free and open to the public.

Great Jewish Thinkers’ Series

Learn about the interesting concepts and ideas of Ahad Ha-Am at the final session of the Great Jewish Thinker's Series on Tuesday, April 3rd at 6:55 pm.Ha-Am was a Jewish modernist from Eastern Europe. He epitomized the rich possibilities of creating a modern, secular, yet authentically Jewish culture, that was truly Jewish, yet without its traditional theological premises. He believed Jewish culture should preempt Jewish politics and that Jewish ethics are indivisible from Jewish nationality.

Passover Seder

Celebrate Passover at Congregation Beth Shalom's First Night Seder on Friday, April 6th. Shabbat services at 6:30 pm will be followed immediately by a kosher seder. Please call 712-255-1990 with your reservation by April 2nd. Adult price is $25; children 5-12 - $10.
If you would like to contribute to our "Elijah" fund to help underwrite the Seder costs, please consider an additional contribution.

Sisterhood Shabbat

TuB'Shevat Seder and Shabbat Service

on Friday, February 3rd at 6:30 pm.
Please join us in our celebration of growth and renewal, TuB'Shevat, the New Year for Trees. Our holiday menu will include a kosher chicken Shabbat dinner and will include the fruits and wine of the Seder.

2011 Kalin Scholar in Residence

Congregation Beth Shalom is pleased to welcome Mark Cohen, Ph.D. as the 2011 Sidney & Geraldine Kalin Scholar in Residence.
Professor Cohen will conduct the 3rd annual Kalin Scholar program at Shabbat Services on Friday, December 2nd at 6:30 pm and Saturday, December 3rd at 9:30 am.
Friday's talk is entitled "Jews, Muslims, and Modern Myths of Muslim Antisemitism." A special Oneg will follow.
Saturdays, address is entitled "Islamophobia and the Jewish Community. An expanded kiddush lunch will follow. Please rsvp for the lunch to the office at 712-255-1990.
Professor Cohen currently services as the Khedouri A. Zilkha Professor of Jewish Civilization in the Near East at Princeton University. In 2010 he was the first winner of the Goldziher Prize for scholarship promoting better understanding between Jews and Muslims.
The public is welcome to attend these events.

Annual Meeting

The Annual Meeting of Congregation Beth Shalom and the Sioux City Jewish Federation will be held on November 20th at Congregation Beth Shalom. A brunch will be served at 11:00 am; the business meeting will begin at 11:30. There is no charge for this event. Reservations are appreciated, please call the office at 255-1990.

Fiddler on the Roof

Broadway at the Orpheum in Sioux City will be showing Fiddler on the Roof on November 16th at 7:30 pm. The Federation has accessed group pricing for our members. Please call the office at 712-255-1990 if you are interested in learning more about this event.

LATKE FEAST

Congregation Beth Shalom will host our famous SUPER LATKE FEAST on Sunday, November 13th from 11:30 to 6:30 pm. All you can eat latkes, plus a deli style meal with tuna salad, egg salad, challah, cheesecake, plus all the trimmings for only $10 for adults and $5 for children. What a bargain! Also, don't forget the fabulous bake sale, perfect timing this year to stock up for Thanksgiving.

High Holiday Tzedakah Project

This year Congregation Beth Shalom is conducting a winter coat collection for individuals of all ages. Coats will be given to the Soup Kitchen for distribution to attendees.


Please bring new, or clean, gently used winter coats or jackets to CBS by Simchat Torah (October 21). Thank you for supporting this mitzvah project!
