Super Latke October 6th
The 10th Super Latke Brunch-Lunch-Dinner with Spectacular Bake Sale will be held on Sunday, October 6th from 11:30 - 6:30 pm.
The menu will feature tuna salad, egg salad, herring, challah, mini cheesecakes and all the latkes you can eat.

Shabbat under the Stars

4th Annual Sioux City Jewish Film Festival
The Fourth Annual Sioux City Jewish Film Festival will feature two films:
Habermann will be shown Thursday, April 11th at 7 pm at Congregation Beth Shalom. Based on true events, the film dramatizes the expulsion of 3 million Germans from Czechoslovakia.
HAVA NAGILA be shown Sunday, April 14th at 2 pm at the Betty Strong Encounter Center. The Center is located on the Missouri Riverfront: exit 149 off I-29. Hava Nagila, the movie, is a documentary romp through the history, mystery and meaning of this great Jewish standard.
Both films are free and open to the public.

2013 Goldstein Lecture
The 2013 Goldstein Scholar, Dr. Amy-Jill Levine, will present a free lecture on Thursday, March 21, 2013 in the Yockey Room, Olsen Student Center on the Morningside College Campus.
Levine, a professor of New Testament and Jewish studies at Vanderbilt University Divinity School and College of Arts and Sciences, will speak on "Jesus, Judaism and Jewish-Christian Relations."

Third Annual Sioux City Jewish Film Festival
The Jewish Federation of Sioux City and the Betty Strong Encounter Center will present the third Annual Sioux City Jewish Film Festival on April 29 and May 3. Admission to both films is free and open to the public.
"Jewish Soldiers in Blue & Gray" will be shown at 2 pm on Sunday, April 29th At the Encounter Center (Missouri Riverfront exit 149 off I-29). The film explores the hisotry of the Civil War Jews who fought on both sides of the battlefield.
"Saviors in the Night" will be shown at 7 pm on Thursday, May 3rd at Congregation Beth Shalom. The film tells the story of courageous farmers who hid the Spiegel family during the Holocaust.

Tolerance Week Activities
The 7th Annual Tolerance Week, sponsored by the Gerald L. & Kathleen A. Weiner Foundation, will be held during the week of April 16-20, 2012. Activities will include:
- Monday, April 16 - 6:00 pm: An evening of poetry and music with a tolerance theme will be hosted by the Sioux City Conservatory of Music, 1300 Pierce St.
- Tuesday, April 17 - 7:30 pm: Nicky's Family, an award winning documentary will be shown at the Orpheum Theater. Dave Lux, a member of Nicky's family who appears in the film, will speak after the film. Lux will also speak at a preview event at WIT at 11:00 am.
- Wednesday, April 18 - 7:00 pm: In the Shadow of the Acropolis, a documentary of the history of the Holocaust in Greece, will be shown in the UPS Auditorium, Morningside College.
- Thursday, April 19 - 4:00 pm: The Art, Poetry & Music of Terezin, a presentation by Nan Wilson will be held in the Stark Student Center, Briar Cliff College.

Great Jewish Thinkers’ Series
Learn about the interesting concepts and ideas of Ahad Ha-Am at the final session of the Great Jewish Thinker's Series on Tuesday, April 3rd at 6:55 pm.Ha-Am was a Jewish modernist from Eastern Europe. He epitomized the rich possibilities of creating a modern, secular, yet authentically Jewish culture, that was truly Jewish, yet without its traditional theological premises. He believed Jewish culture should preempt Jewish politics and that Jewish ethics are indivisible from Jewish nationality.

Professor Cohen will conduct the 3rd annual Kalin Scholar program at Shabbat Services on Friday, December 2nd at 6:30 pm and Saturday, December 3rd at 9:30 am.
Friday's talk is entitled "Jews, Muslims, and Modern Myths of Muslim Antisemitism." A special Oneg will follow.

This year Congregation Beth Shalom is conducting a winter coat collection for individuals of all ages. Coats will be given to the Soup Kitchen for distribution to attendees.

2011 UJC Campaign Kickoff Event
Please join Daniel Kaplan, 2011 Campaign Chair, and the Sioux City Jewish Community Board of Directors for the 2011 Campaign Kickoff Event on Wednesday, September 21st at 5:30 pm at Congregation Beth Shalom.
The free event will include hearty hors d'oeuvres and an open bar. A brief program will be given at 6:00 pm. Parents of Midrasha students are encouraged to stop in before picking up their students. Please rsvp to 255-1990 by September 19th.

Hadassah/Sisterhood Opening Meeting
The joint meeting of the Sioux City Chapter of Hadassah and the CBS Sisterhood will be held on Tuesday, September 13 at noon. The program will feature Sioux City Media Critic, Bruce Miller, who will share all the latest Hollywood dish.
Bring your unwanted gold and gold expert John Jackson will weigh and evaluate it. You will be paid spot gold price for your donation to Hadassah.
The luncheon price is $9. Please call in your reservation to the CBS office by Friday, September 9th.
Music Shabbat
Congregation Beth Shalom's Shabbat Services on Friday, September 16th will feature a musical Shabbat led by our own Michele Ivener. Other musicians include Grant Beckwith, Holly Haddad and Michele Grossman. Services will begin at 6:30 pm.
Federation Picnic
The Sioux City Jewish Federation will host the annual picnic on Sunday, September 11 at Riverside Park, Pavilion #1 from 4:30 - 6:30.
The free event will feature a dinner at 5 pm of kosher hot dogs and all the trimmings. Everyone is welcome! Hope to see you there. (Rain site is Congregation Beth Shalom.)

Tisha B'Av
Erev Tisha B'Av Services at Congregation Beth Shalom will be held on Monday, August 8th at 8 pm.
Tisha B'Av is the commemoration of the destruction of the first Temple in 585 B.C.E. and the Second Temple in 70 C.E., the beginning of the Spanish Inquisition in 1492 as well as a variety of Nazi atrocities.

Celebrate the gift of the Torah and the Ten Commandments at Shavuot services at Congregation Beth Shalom.
Wednesday, June 8th at 10:00 am: Torah, Hallel, Haftorah and the Ten Commandments will be read. A Yizkor service will be held at 11:00 am (approximately).
Thursday, June 9th from 1:00 - 2:00 pm. It is customary to study the Torah on Shavuot as an expression of one's desire to draw closer to G-d. Please call to make a reservation. Class will be held if there are three participants or more.

Sisterhood/Hadassah Closing Luncheon
Iran Divestiture Legislation will be the topic when Congregation Beth Shalom Sisterhood and the Sioux City Chapter of Hadassah meet for their spring joint luncheon at noon on Tuesday, May 10, 2011 at Congregation Beth Shalom. Dan Lederman, our own South Dakota State Senator will share information about the divestiture legislation that he is sponsoring.

Yom Ha'Atmaut Celebration
Congregation Beth Shalom will observe Israel Independence Day (Yom Ha'Atzmaut) at the Friday, May 6th Shabbat Service at 7:30 pm. The service will include special Shabbat and Israeli music. A festive Oneg will follow. Everyone is invited to attend.
2011 Jewish Film Festival
The 2nd film of the 2011 Sioux City Jewish Film Festival, Berlin 36, will be shown at the Betty Strong Encounter Center on Thursday, May 5th at 6:30 pm. The film is a true story of two female athletes competing in the Berlin Olympics. The film is free and open to the public.

Yom HaShoah Commemorative Events
Congregation Beth Shalom will conduct a Holocaust Memorial Service on Sunday, May 1st at 6:15 pm. We come together to light the Holocaust candles: to remember those whom we know and those whose very names are lost.
Immediately following the service, the Sioux City Jewish Film Festival will show the first film of the 2011 series: LaRafle. A French-language film with English subtitles, LaRafle, will take the audience to July 16, 1942 when 13,000 Jews were "rounded up" by French police and forced into Paris' Winter Velodrome.
The public is welcome to attend these events. There is no charge.

The Goldstein Lecture will take place on Thursday, March 17th at 7:30 pm in the Yockey Community Room, Olsen Center, 3609 Peters Ave., Morningside College.
A. J. Jacobs will speak on "My Year of Living Biblically." He is the editor-at-large at Esquire magazine and author of three New York Times bestsellers. The Year of Living Biblically was released in 2007.

Purim Celebration
Congregation Beth Shalom will sponsor the annual Purim Celebration on Sunday, March 20th from 11:00 am - 12:30. There will be fun for all ages with games and prizes at our Purim Carnival. he day will begin with the Megillah Reading and Purim Spiel at 11:00 am. The carnival will begin immediately following the reading. A dairy lunch will be served at noon: adults $5 and children under 12 free. Please rsvp to the office at 255-1990.
The Purim Celebration is in lieu of Midrasha classes. Also, don't forget Shabbat Services on Friday, March 18th will switch to 7:30 pm.
Adult Ed: Hillel and Shamai
The latest in our Adult Education series will discuss: Hillel and Shamai: Same Torah, Different Interpretations of Jewish Thought and Law. The class will be held at CBS on Sunday, March 13th from 7:30 - 8:30 pm.
Hillel the Elder was one of the greatest sages of the Second Temple period. Hillel sought to bring people closer to the Torah through his ethical, religious teachers which were preserved in a series of proverbs. Shammai, the founder of the great school of Bet Shammai, took a stringent attitute as compared with the more lenient one of Bet Hillel. We will compare and contrast their judicial teachings of Jewish law.
CBS and Midrasha Mitzvah Day
All congregants, children and parents of CBS are encouraged to participate in the annual Mitzvah Day projects on Sunday, March 6, 2011 from 10:15 - 12:55.
Participants will pack Passover gifts for our Jewish troops at CBS from 10:15 - 10:45. We will then move to the Crittenton Center - Stella Sanford, 1724 Geneva Street to provide some needed cleaning help to the daycare center.

Tu B'Shevat Seder & Shabbat Service
Please join us in our celebration of growth and renewal, Tu B'Shevat, the New Year for trees.
Our special holiday menu will feature a kosher chicken Shabbat dinner and will include the fruits and wine of the Seder.

Come and learn to translate the prayers of our siddur, so that you can understand their meaning and get more out of services. This is a class for beginners. No Hebrew Experience Necessary.

Lights, Camera, Donor!
The Sioux City Chapter of Hadassah will meet for the 77th annual Donor Event at noon, Tuesday, November 2, 2010 at Congregation Beth Shalom.
Guests will view "The Little Traitor" a great film featured at last year's St. Louis Film Festival.
Lunch - including kosher hot dogs and popcorn - is only $9.

2010 Kalin Scholar in Residence
Congregation Beth Shalom is pleased to announce Alan T. Levenson as the 2010 Sidney & Geraldine Scholar in Residence. Dr. Levenson will speak at Shabbat services and conduct a workshop at CBS as follows:
- Friday, November 5th at 7:30 pm Services. Dr. Levenson will speak on "Zionism and the Bible." Special Oneg!
- Saturday, November 6th at 9:30 am Services. Dr. Levenson will speak on "Spinoza as a Jewish Bible Critic." An expanded Kiddush lunch will follow. Please rsvp for the meal.
- Saturday, November 6th at 7:00 pm. Dr. Levenson will conduct a 1 hr presentation on "Teaching the Story of Jacob & Esau." This workshop is primarily for teachers, but anyone is welcome. The workshop will be preceded by a light supper. Please rsvp for the meal.
Dr. Levenson has written extensively on the Jewish experience for both scholarly and popular audiences and is considered a leading authority on the modern Jewish experience. He has lectured in the United States, Israel and Germany.

the Food Bank Back Pack program.

Mommy, Daddy and Me Classes
Congregation Beth Shalom is pleased to announce the resumption of the Mommy, Daddy and Me Classes. The sessions will be held once a month on Monday mornings from 11:30 - 12:30. Preschoolers and (at least) one parent are welcome to attend the classes which are taught by the Rabbi and feature arts and crafts and movement.
The fall session dates are: October 18, November 15, and December 13. Additional dates will be scheduled after January 1. Please call the office to register.
Adult Education: Book of Daniel
The first Adult Education series of the new year will begin on October 24th at 9:30 am. Paul Levin will teach a 3 part series based on the book of Daniel. The discussion will begin with the text, but will use additional works to highlight this influential book.

Pet Blessing
The annual blessing of the pets by Rabbi Greene will be held on Sunday, October 17th at the end of Midrasha classes (approximately noon). All members are encouraged to bring their friendly pets to this fun event.

Interfaith Forum: Islam, Christianity & Judaism
The Lifelong Learning Program of Western Iowa Tech Community College is sponsoring an Interfaith Form: Islam, Christianity and Judaism which will be held on Tuesday, September 21 from noon to 1:30 pm. The event will be held in the Cargill Auditorium, Room D103 with access using Entrance 14 and Parking Lot 4. There is no charge and Lifelong Learning membership is not required.
Rabbi Guy Greene will join Imam Akmad Mohammad and Rev. R. Paul Johnston of Trinity Lutheran Church for a panel presentation during which the main beliefs and practices of the religions will be explored.

Classes will be presenting songs, dances and plays.

Mitzvah Day May 16th
The 2010 Sioux City Jewish Federation Midrasha Mitzvah Day will be held on May 16th at the Betty Strong Encounter Center at 11:00 am.
Everyone in the community is invited to meet at the Center to participate in this year's projects which include planting and cleaning the grounds. Lunch will be served at 12:45 and will be followed by the showing of the family comedy, "66", the first presentation of the Sioux City Jewish Film Festival.
Please wear comfortable clothes, and bring small gardening tools such as trowels. The rain site for the Mitzvah Day is CONGREGATION BETH SHALOM.

Shabbat Speaker April 30th
Congregation Beth Shalom invites everyone to a Shabbat Service, Friday, April 30th at 7:30.
Following the service during the Oneg, Erica DeLeon, Executive Director of the Mary J. Treglia Community House will speak on diversity in the Siouxland community. Ms. DeLeon will focus on current immigration issues, both locally and on the national level. A question and answer period will follow.
1st Sioux City Jewish Film Festival
The 1st Sioux City Jewish Film Festival will be held on Sunday, May 16th and Thursday, May 20th at the Betty Strong Encounter Center.
"Sixty Six", a Paul Weiland family comedy, will be shown at 1:30 pm Sunday May 16th. Based on a true-life story, "Sixty Six" will take the audience to England in the summer of 1966 as events unfold for the biggest day in the life of 12-year old Bern's life: his bar mitzvah.
"Lemon Tree", Israel and Palestine - a conflict of cultures, will be shown at 7:30 pm Thursday, May 20th. An award winning Israeli film, Lemon Tree tells the story of two families who live on the green line border between Israel and the West Bank.

Yom Ha'Atzmaut & Tolerance Week Activities
Celebrate Shabbat and Yom Ha'Atmaut at Congregation Beth Shalom on Friday, April 16th at 7:30 pm. Rabbi Greene will be joined by musicians from the Sioux City Symphony. An Israeli Oneg will follow.
The award winning film, "The Courageous Heart of Irena Sendler," will be shown at the Orpheum theater on Tuesday, April 13th at 8 pm. The showing is free and open to the public.
Congregation Beth Shalom will host a "Lunch and Learn" on Wednesday, April 14th from 12:00 - 1:00. Renata Zajdman, one of the people saved by the Polish network, will share her story. The event is free, but reservations are needed for the lunch. Please call 712-255-1990,
Yom HaShoah
Congregation Beth Shalom Holocaust Memorial Service will be held Sunday, April 11th at 7:00 pm.
We come together to light the Holocaust candles: to remember those whom we know and those whose very names are lost.
