The Jewish Federation of Sioux City, Congregation Beth Shalom and the Betty Strong Encounter Center will present the third Annual Sioux City Jewish Film Festival on May 12th and May 15th. Admission to both films is free and open to the public.
"Wunderkinder" 7 pm on Thursday, May 12th at Congregation Beth Shalom. The film tells the story of three musically talented children—two Jewish and one German—who develop a deep and genuine friendship, extending beyond their different religions and nationalities. The two Jewish children, Larissa and Abrascha, are both virtuosos—one on the piano and the other on the violin. Hanna, a young German girl, is also extremely gifted. Living in Poltava, Ukraine in 1941, they all share one great love: music. Their world is one of curiosity, joy, and talent. But when the Nazis invade the Soviet Union, they and their families face mortal peril. A crowd-pleasing audience favorite, Wunderkinder took home Audience Awards at the San Diego Jewish Film Festival, Stony Brook Film Festival, Atlanta Jewish Film Festival and the Los Angeles Jewish Film Festival.

"Above and Beyond"  2 pm on Sunday, May 15th at the Betty Strong Encounter Center (Missouri Riverfront exit 149 off I-29). The film explores  how a ragtag band of volunteer airmen mobilized in the skies above Israel to fight for the fledgling nation’s survival. Barely home from WWII combat, these ace pilots – mostly Jewish- Americans – found themselves compelled to do battle yet again, this time  in defense of an ill-equipped Jewish state. At risk of losing their citizenship and their lives, they smuggled out surplus planes and ammunition and trained in secret. Relying on a small squadron of rickety aircraft, a handful of young foreign pilots laid the foundation for the Israeli Air Force. With pluck, humor and chutzpah, these now-aging wingmen colorfully recount their remarkable mission. Interviews include family descendants, scholars, Israeli President Shimon Perez, and actor Paul Reubens (aka Pee-wee Herman) whose father flew sorties against an advancing Iraqi army. Testimonies are enhanced by dazzling aerial dogfights recreated by George Lucas's special effects shop Industrial Light & Magic. Directed by Roberta Grossman and produced by Nancy Spielberg.
