2011 Kalin Scholar in Residence

Congregation Beth Shalom is pleased to welcome Mark Cohen, Ph.D. as the 2011 Sidney & Geraldine Kalin Scholar in Residence.
Professor Cohen will conduct the 3rd annual Kalin Scholar program at Shabbat Services on Friday, December 2nd at 6:30 pm and Saturday, December 3rd at 9:30 am.
Friday's talk is entitled "Jews, Muslims, and Modern Myths of Muslim Antisemitism." A special Oneg will follow.
Saturdays, address is entitled "Islamophobia and the Jewish Community. An expanded kiddush lunch will follow. Please rsvp for the lunch to the office at 712-255-1990.
Professor Cohen currently services as the Khedouri A. Zilkha Professor of Jewish Civilization in the Near East at Princeton University. In 2010 he was the first winner of the Goldziher Prize for scholarship promoting better understanding between Jews and Muslims.
The public is welcome to attend these events.

Annual Meeting

The Annual Meeting of Congregation Beth Shalom and the Sioux City Jewish Federation will be held on November 20th at Congregation Beth Shalom. A brunch will be served at 11:00 am; the business meeting will begin at 11:30. There is no charge for this event. Reservations are appreciated, please call the office at 255-1990.

Fiddler on the Roof

Broadway at the Orpheum in Sioux City will be showing Fiddler on the Roof on November 16th at 7:30 pm. The Federation has accessed group pricing for our members. Please call the office at 712-255-1990 if you are interested in learning more about this event.

LATKE FEAST

Congregation Beth Shalom will host our famous SUPER LATKE FEAST on Sunday, November 13th from 11:30 to 6:30 pm. All you can eat latkes, plus a deli style meal with tuna salad, egg salad, challah, cheesecake, plus all the trimmings for only $10 for adults and $5 for children. What a bargain! Also, don't forget the fabulous bake sale, perfect timing this year to stock up for Thanksgiving.

2011 UJC Campaign Kickoff Event

Please join Daniel Kaplan, 2011 Campaign Chair, and the Sioux City Jewish Community Board of Directors for the 2011 Campaign Kickoff Event on Wednesday, September 21st at 5:30 pm at Congregation Beth Shalom.

Hadassah/Sisterhood Opening Meeting

The joint meeting of the Sioux City Chapter of Hadassah and the CBS Sisterhood will be held on Tuesday, September 13 at noon. The program will feature Sioux City Media Critic, Bruce Miller, who will share all the latest Hollywood dish.




Bring your unwanted gold and gold expert John Jackson will weigh and evaluate it. You will be paid spot gold price for your donation to Hadassah.




The luncheon price is $9. Please call in your reservation to the CBS office by Friday, September 9th.

Music Shabbat

Congregation Beth Shalom's Shabbat Services on Friday, September 16th will feature a musical Shabbat led by our own Michele Ivener. Other musicians include Grant Beckwith, Holly Haddad and Michele Grossman. Services will begin at 6:30 pm.

Federation Picnic

The Sioux City Jewish Federation will host the annual picnic on Sunday, September 11 at Riverside Park, Pavilion #1 from 4:30 - 6:30.




The free event will feature a dinner at 5 pm of kosher hot dogs and all the trimmings. Everyone is welcome! Hope to see you there. (Rain site is Congregation Beth Shalom.)

Tisha B'Av

Erev Tisha B'Av Services at Congregation Beth Shalom will be held on Monday, August 8th at 8 pm.
Tisha B'Av is the commemoration of the destruction of the first Temple in 585 B.C.E. and the Second Temple in 70 C.E., the beginning of the Spanish Inquisition in 1492 as well as a variety of Nazi atrocities.

Shavuot Services

Celebrate the gift of the Torah and the Ten Commandments at Shavuot services at Congregation Beth Shalom.

Wednesday, June 8th at 10:00 am: Torah, Hallel, Haftorah and the Ten Commandments will be read. A Yizkor service will be held at 11:00 am (approximately).

Thursday, June 9th from 1:00 - 2:00 pm. It is customary to study the Torah on Shavuot as an expression of one's desire to draw closer to G-d. Please call to make a reservation. Class will be held if there are three participants or more.

Sisterhood/Hadassah Closing Luncheon

Iran Divestiture Legislation will be the topic when Congregation Beth Shalom Sisterhood and the Sioux City Chapter of Hadassah meet for their spring joint luncheon at noon on Tuesday, May 10, 2011 at Congregation Beth Shalom. Dan Lederman, our own South Dakota State Senator will share information about the divestiture legislation that he is sponsoring.

Yom Ha'Atmaut Celebration

Congregation Beth Shalom will observe Israel Independence Day (Yom Ha'Atzmaut) at the Friday, May 6th Shabbat Service at 7:30 pm. The service will include special Shabbat and Israeli music. A festive Oneg will follow. Everyone is invited to attend.

2011 Jewish Film Festival

The 2nd film of the 2011 Sioux City Jewish Film Festival, Berlin 36, will be shown at the Betty Strong Encounter Center on Thursday, May 5th at 6:30 pm. The film is a true story of two female athletes competing in the Berlin Olympics. The film is free and open to the public.

Yom HaShoah Commemorative Events

Congregation Beth Shalom will conduct a Holocaust Memorial Service on Sunday, May 1st at 6:15 pm. We come together to light the Holocaust candles: to remember those whom we know and those whose very names are lost.

Immediately following the service, the Sioux City Jewish Film Festival will show the first film of the 2011 series: LaRafle. A French-language film with English subtitles, LaRafle, will take the audience to July 16, 1942 when 13,000 Jews were "rounded up" by French police and forced into Paris' Winter Velodrome.

The public is welcome to attend these events. There is no charge.

2011 Goldstein Lecture

The Goldstein Lecture will take place on Thursday, March 17th at 7:30 pm in the Yockey Community Room, Olsen Center, 3609 Peters Ave., Morningside College.


A. J. Jacobs will speak on "My Year of Living Biblically." He is the editor-at-large at Esquire magazine and author of three New York Times bestsellers. The Year of Living Biblically was released in 2007.

Purim Celebration

Congregation Beth Shalom will sponsor the annual Purim Celebration on Sunday, March 20th from 11:00 am - 12:30. There will be fun for all ages with games and prizes at our Purim Carnival. he day will begin with the Megillah Reading and Purim Spiel at 11:00 am. The carnival will begin immediately following the reading. A dairy lunch will be served at noon: adults $5 and children under 12 free. Please rsvp to the office at 255-1990.


The Purim Celebration is in lieu of Midrasha classes. Also, don't forget Shabbat Services on Friday, March 18th will switch to 7:30 pm.

Adult Ed: Hillel and Shamai

The latest in our Adult Education series will discuss: Hillel and Shamai: Same Torah, Different Interpretations of Jewish Thought and Law. The class will be held at CBS on Sunday, March 13th from 7:30 - 8:30 pm.


Hillel the Elder was one of the greatest sages of the Second Temple period. Hillel sought to bring people closer to the Torah through his ethical, religious teachers which were preserved in a series of proverbs. Shammai, the founder of the great school of Bet Shammai, took a stringent attitute as compared with the more lenient one of Bet Hillel. We will compare and contrast their judicial teachings of Jewish law.

CBS and Midrasha Mitzvah Day

All congregants, children and parents of CBS are encouraged to participate in the annual Mitzvah Day projects on Sunday, March 6, 2011 from 10:15 - 12:55.

Participants will pack Passover gifts for our Jewish troops at CBS from 10:15 - 10:45. We will then move to the Crittenton Center - Stella Sanford, 1724 Geneva Street to provide some needed cleaning help to the daycare center.

Tu B'Shevat Seder & Shabbat Service

Please join us in our celebration of growth and renewal, Tu B'Shevat, the New Year for trees.

Our special holiday menu will feature a kosher chicken Shabbat dinner and will include the fruits and wine of the Seder.

Adults: $12.50 and Children under 10: $5.00.

Reservations are needed for the meal. Mail your check to CBS by January 18th.

Prayer Hebrew Class

Come and learn to translate the prayers of our siddur, so that you can understand their meaning and get more out of services. This is a class for beginners. No Hebrew Experience Necessary.

Monday Evenings: January 10th & 17th from 8:00 to 9:00 pm.
